XI – Friend or foe?
No one moved as the bangs were heard again, louder this time. "This is your last warning!" Not even three seconds passed before the guild hall door was crashing in, splintering and cracking as hit the floor. A squad of five ogres led by an ill tempered looking dark elf burst into the now very full hall.
"I’m not to partial to the law. And I have no means in being arrested for a human's crimes." The high elf exclaimed reaching down and withdrawing his sword. "Now that we all have a common goal here, I hope…I say we take care of the problem before it spreads any further.
Somebody might wanna cover the door so they can't go get help." Just as he finished that I watched the ogre toss a small throwing axe from behind him, the wind of it messing his hair. The axe slams into an ogre guard’s knee, splitting the armor and splintering the knee. With a loud groan the ogre dropped down onto the injured kneed, smashing the axe deeper into his leg.
The high elf turned around to see his troll friend smiling and then shrugged as if he wasn't the one to blame for that. "Sorree.” He said giggling.
The ratonga’s eyes filled with hate as he looked up at the high elf. “You should put a leash on that Troll. Do you think Lord Lucan will take the death of five guards and a captain lightly?” The question was rhetorical and he didn’t expect an answer in return.
He turned to another half elf who I had just noticed now, a female that seemed to have an emission of light surrounding her and nodded. She nodded back moving forward and chanting a spell as the Ratonga made a signal to the dark elf, who then pulled me into a side room as the guard’s wound began to heal.
“Thanks…” I said softly after we were safe in the other room. “Look I didn’t mean anything by what I said, I’m just naturally very defensive…I meant no disrespect to you if you meant none to me.” The dark elf just nodded and opened the door leading me back out just in time to hear the Ratonga speak.
“If you think every guard in Freeport wasn’t aware of the Captains mission and his whereabouts then you are a fool. I will not have us fight against our own Militia.” His eyes once again glazed with fury. “Combat is not the answer to every problem, if you don’t realize this then you are no better than the Troll.”
He turned to the dark elf. “My thanks for your quick actions, reliable as always.” He said slightly bowing to the Dark Elf. His face stern he turned to me “Many beggars would have accepted the coin tossed by Renesis, you however threw it back. The look in your eyes were defiant and proud, no you are no mere beggar. I wish to hear more about you, please follow me.” He beckoned everyone to follow him into an adjacent room, and looking around seeing the guards gone I decided to indulge him. Once in the other room, he bid us all have a seat and turned his attention to me, his eyes ablaze with curiosity.
After being led across the entrance hall into the other side room I watched as the others all sat down and approached the table slowly. I still didn't feel safe surrounded by all these strangers, but decided that since they had helped me I owed them this much. I also decided it would be safer to stay in a place the militia believed he wasn't at, so in order to stay safe, I would have to stay in a potentially dangerous situation. Thats my luck I thought, holding back any form of emotion.
I cautiously sat down, staying completly on guard as I spoke. "I don't normally talk about myself to anyone...but you just might have saved my life there so I feel it’s the least I can do to honor your request."
I cleared my throat, rubbing my fingers through my hair and scratching the middle of my head. "While I'm not exactly sure what it is you want to know about me, I'll give you the basic rundown." I paused, still not believing I was about to open up to a room full of strangers, but in some strange way it almost felt right.
"I'm an orphan, or at least my parents left me or died before I can remember." I paused with a sigh. "So yea before you ask I have no name to speak of...a nickname that has stuck with me through the years though is Scar, due to this..." I ran my index and middle finger from the top of my scar to the bottom.
"Not that I like it or anything, but from the few social interactions I've had in my life its the most popular one...the most popular one that isn't profanity of course." I said with a half smirk. "As for your previous comment, you are half-right...I am not a beggar. I have been alone my entire life and have managed to keep myself alive by myself...I don't need anyone's charity."
I thought about it. "Proud on the other hand...I hate that I am reduced to stealing loaves of bread in order to eat...and I have done countless other things that I am not proud of...but things that had to be done." I let out another sigh for a moment lowering his guard. "I guess you do what you have to do."
I thought again and smiled. "So I guess I am proud that I was able to adapt and do what was needed to be done and survive so long...good eye." My smirk quickly faded as I raised my defenses again. "Besides all that, if there's anything else your curious about feel free to ask."
"Pardon me for interrupting, but I must be quite frank." Addressing the Ratonga, the Erudite spoke quickly. "This situation just does not make sense. Why would a militia captain and an entire squad be hunting so intensely this man who merely stole a loaf of bread? I believe--" She was cut short when loud voices were heard from the main hall. "Captain Feanor! Here! That is the man who slaughtered Lord Lucan's scouts!” A voice squeaked accusingly.
It was then that I noticed another Dark elf who had stepped from the shadows to listen to my story, and I quickly turned my head around as two of the Ogre guards came in roughly grabbing the dark elf’s shoulders. “Hey!” He cried out annoyed.
The imperious dark elf Captain Feanor strode into the room and made his statement, unsmiling. "This evening four scouts were dispatched by myself to track an unknown high elf male that enter Freeport only a few hours ago. He is not as is stated by law registered with the city immigration and is thus labeled a threat.
He was seen entering this guild hall. This elf here," motioning to the second dark elf, "was also seen in the act of murdering two of my scouts. He will be dealt with accordingly. But now-- now this is your last redeeming chance before I make you ALL answer to Lord Lucan! My patience is wearing very thin so answer me quickly! WHERE IS THE HIGH ELF?"
I let out a sigh of relief realizing that they weren’t looking for me at all, and looked around the room for the high elf, who must have hid in the shadows, but now walked out with a calm smile on his face. "Can't a traveler just get some peace and quiet?" he said with a laugh. "I've caused enough havoc here for one day. I've done nothing wrong so I'll just let the guards speak with me." The high elf walked towards the guards turning around to his Troll friend with a smile. "Don't worry, I'll be fine."
One of the Ogre's began sniffing and left to the main hall. "What is it?" Feanor asked leaving the other Ogre to watch the room.
"Dis be ded rat." The ogre said fingering the dried blood.
Captain Feanor cursed shaking his head. "So this is where the other one wound up." His voice rose. "Damn it this is why I wanted to hire assassins and not rogues."
"Thifs cheepr!" The ogre bellowed back.
Feanor shook his head and stood up heading back into the side room. "In addition to the high elf and half elf we will be taking whoever is responsible for that as well." He said suddenly freezing. "Wait a minute..."
I silently cursed feeling his eyes burn into the back of my head He walked over and twisted the chair around with a smile. "And what's this, a bonus as well."
I just smiled looking up at the captain, losing faith in a violent less day. “Go to hell.”
"Very articulate...now which of you is responsible for what happened out there?" Silence filled the room once again as the captain’s anger rose. “If you wont tell me then I’ll just have to take you all in.”
I watched in shock as the other dark elf rolled his eyes, pulling out his dagger and plunged it into his abdomen. The guards holding him were as shocked as the rest of us, as he winced in pain and slowly and methodically cut across his stomach to the right, and then began cutting upwards to his chest, blood pouring freely out of the wound. Shortly after he started cutting upwards the Dark Elf passed out from the pain, body unconsciously writhing about on the ground for a few minutes before finally becoming still.
I rubbed my eyes as reality itself seemed to bend, the captain’s body flickering in and out of my vision as if I was blinking him and only him on and off. “No... this is not right...” The dark elf said without moving her lips, I looked at her closely totally bewildered.
The dark elf captain took a step backwards as the sticky red liquid threatened to dirty his fine black boots. "Well I guess that answers my question..." he sneered. “Ugh, what a damn mess. Alright men! Take these two to the pit and--"
I watched as the half elf, his face burning with rage jumped out of his seat and with a blood curdling battle cry plunged his sword directly into the sneering captain’s heart. With a sickening choke he fell besides the half elf unmoving.
"No, Zefiris!! I can resurrect him! Stop!!" The other half elf cried out, falling on deaf ears. Her eyes met with the Ratonga’s as if to say "What now!? Do something!"
Zefiris' rage fell upon the high elf brigand as he rushed into the room. "Holy hell!" he exclaimed, eyes wide. He looked up just in time to see a swirl of white hair as he was tackled to the floor. He did his best to fend off the wild attacks as the half elf growled, "This is YOUR doing, HIGH ELF! I'll rip you apart! I'LL KILL YOU!"
The five ogres now returning from their surprised stupor lunged for Zefiris. "Back him up! Everyone help him!" The ratonga barked his order and sprang into action. 'I have nothing left to lose now but my friends, and this has to end here and now!'
Again I was able to hear the Ratonga speak without him moving his mouth as I cracked my knuckles and stood up. Immediately the room erupted into a brawl. "Dis be mor liek it! Hell yeah!" The troll shouted gleefully as his axe slammed into an orgre's shoulder.
I went after another guard all by myself, punching him again and again in the chest. I had just defeated two of them the other day so I had no doubt that this would turn out alright. I roundhouse kicked him down smashing into the table as my eye caught the Erudite.
She stood in the middle of the room, but nothing seemed to touch her. She remained motionless, still staring at the dead bodies on the floor. The scene once more flickered. This time the entire world seemed to. I watched as the room and everyone in it stretched and skewed while it flickerd, everything but the Erudite, who still stood there calmly.
“Stop.”
The ogres, the fire in the hearth, and in fact all of reality seemed to freeze. Everyone stopped and confused looks dominated. Zefiris hesitated and the high elf threw him to one side. "Get off me and look around you idiot! What the--"
"Wat teh FEK!" Corrupted shouted in dismay, clearly not enjoying himself any longer. The ratonga relaxed his fighting stance and wiped some blood from his cloak. I stayed quiet still in complete awe, looking at the troll I had smashed into the desk hovering a few inches in the air, shards of wood motionlessly floating as well.
The erudite let out a small laugh which was so unexpected that it got everyone's attention. The Ratonga’s eyes came to rest on the amused Erudite. "Nerces, what is the meaning of this? You laugh as if you know what this means..." Everyone waited.
Nerces smiled at the Ratonga, beginning to speak calmly, "Perhaps we should start over anew, don't you think? I am sorry this little experiment of mine was not to your liking, Master Eikichi. However, I still look forward to meeting you all in the coming weeks and I wish you more pleasant dreams in the nights to come." The room began to flicker wildly. With a bow Nerces shouted her command.
“NOW WAKE UP!”
