XII – Getting fed
My eyes opened quickly with a gasp as I looked around frantically. "What the hell?" I said catching my breath and sitting up stretching. The dream had seemed so real, so vivid… normally I never remembered any of my dreams, but this one stood out...almost as if someone was calling out to me.
The fact that I was so open in the dream, let all those strangers know about my past and my secrets that i had never told a soul before made me feel weird, especially since as i did it I felt a new feeling...one I had never felt before.
I couldn't say what it was...maybe relief to be able to let go and trust in people, maybe a feeling of safety being with possible people I could trust, maybe acceptance...the one thing that I probably wanted the most, no matter how much I denied it to myself.
I looked around the empty building that I was staying in as a familiar grumble in my stomach brought me back to reality. Then again maybe this wasn’t reality, the dream had seemed so real…I felt my stomach growling, I felt my fist hit the ogre’s, and I remembered every minute of it.
I shook my head with a smile. "Snap out of it, it was just a dream." I stretched again walking out into the hot Freeport sun with a frown, wishing it wasn't so hot and trying to think how I was going to get some food. Inspired by my dream I headed down the street to the bakery...where I saw the same customer inside buying the same items as in my dream. This was a little too coincidental, so I decided not to even try and walked away slowly, my mind swimming with thoughts.
I decided to head over to Longshadow Alley to try and find the building from the dream, but I didn’t know exactly where it was, and since I didn’t really look at the building before rushing in any one of them could have been it. After a few hours I decided it was stupid to try and find this place, and headed to the bar nearby.
My stomach was growling more then ever, and I smiled seeing a basket of complimentary bread out on the bar, walking over and taking a slice. “What you want?” A dark elf bartender asked rudely looking at me.
“Uh, nothing.” I said softly padding my pockets. “I’m a little low on coin.”
He laughed. “So you’re here just for the bread then eh?”
I smirked. “Humans do need to eat you know.”
He rolled his eyes. “Whatever.” He said sarcastically walking back down the bar to another dark elf couple.
I let out a sigh of relief, too weak to really get into another fight as I downed the bread and picked up another two pieces walking away from the bar and sitting down on one of the empty tables.
I peered around the bar, at this hour it was mostly empty except for the couple at the bar and a lone dark elf who sat with his back to me. He glanced back hearing me sit down and smiled. “Scar?” I looked up recognizing him as a member of the underground market I used to do jobs for, then nodded with a smile as he got up and sat down across from me. “I thought you were dead?”
I put my finger to my lips after swallowing a mouthful of bread. “I am.”
He laughed taking a sip of his ale as he watched me eat the bread. “Hungry huh?”
“Dead men don’t have bank accounts.” I said still chewing.
He laughed. “Let me get you something.”
I shook my head. “That’s ok.”
“I insist.” He said waving over the barkeep. “Get my friend here you’re best ale.”
I just smiled not wanting to fight about it. “Thanks.” I said finishing up the bread. “What are you up to?”
“Still working in the underground, a new leader stepped up right after Lucan took down the old one so everything is still going smoothly.” He paused as the bartender placed a cup in front of me. “Speaking of which I heard that he snitched on you, how did you get out of that one?”
“I have my ways.” I said taking a sip to my dry mouth.
“Well you’d better just hope Lucan doesn’t realize your still alive.”
“He has better things to worry about I’m sure.” I paused. “Does the new leader of the underworld have an arrangement with him too?”
He nodded. “If he didn’t the underworld wouldn’t last too long.” He said with a laugh. “And as long as he doesn’t get greedy and piss Lucan off like his predecessor I think it will stay well for along while.” He paused taking a gulp of his ale. “Why, do you need work?”
I paused with a sigh, still not sure if I wanted to return to that lifestyle, but knowing that I defiantly did need the money. “Not sure…”
“You’re not sure?” He said with a laugh. “If you’ve got no coin and have to feed yourself in a bar then I’d say you do.” I looked at him angrily, his laughs stopping abruptly. “Sorry…I’m just saying is all.”
I nodded. “I know…but I’m getting pretty tired of running and hiding from the guards.”
He shrugged. “Well what else are you going to do?” I shrugged. “Then it doesn’t look like you have much of a choice.”
I sighed as something caught my eye. A Ratonga walking passed the bar door, who looked exactly like the one from my dream they called Eikichi. “I’ll get back to you.” I said my eyes fixed on the Ratonga as I stood up and left the bar. The dark elf said something but I was too entranced to hear as I followed the Ratonga down the street, keeping my distance.
Eventually we made it too a large building, and pausing he went inside. I swallowed hard looking at the building, seeing if I could remember if this was the one. I paced back and forth trying to decide whether or not I would knock, and if I did what would I say? I saw you in a dream last night and followed you to your home?
But I knew that I had to do it, I was being pulled towards this building even now I felt it. And if something was going to go down at least I had a full stomach. I sighed and crossed the street, looking at the door for another moment before finally knocking.
