Fool's Gold was a nice spot to quench ones thirst. It was never overcrowded, the service was excellent and the Halfling wenches were a welcome sight compared to the sights to and from Rivervale. Between the Undead in Kithicor Forrest and the Orcs in Misty Thicket a robust Halfling lady was a nice change of pace.
Certain Halfling twins would occasionally meet here to tell grand stories, usually stretched beyond imagination, but seasoned well enough to make a good tale that would gather all that was in hearing distance. Mapus who walked the Druid Order and Hegwin a jester of a rogue, who very fond of his brothers way, just couldn't keep his hands out of other peoples pockets. What a contrast the twins were. This quiet evening found the diverse pair sitting in a dark corner whispering, as if a great secret was unfolding.
“I tell you Map it was the strangest thing.” Hegwin spoke low to the table, his eyes looking around as if something was wrong with everything in the world.
“Art and I have always been good friends, always.”
“I have never seen him act this way.” Mapus listened intently on the words that were being said, knowing exactly how his brother was feeling.
“I know Heg. Something is wrong, something bad wrong.” Mapus rubbed his little hands together, his voice shook with the words he tried to say.
“Mak and I had bunches of times together, bunches. He isn't the same Heg, no not the same at all.”
Mapus’s eyes began to water, and he began to shake.
“He said bad things to me Heg . . . Bad things.”
“I saw him runnin’ by the dock in Oasis, so I ran after him. “ I kept runnin’ around him and talkin’, but he wouldn't answer, he wouldn't even look at me.” Hegwin put his hand on his twin’s shoulder for comfort. Mapus looked hard at Hegwin.
“But when he did talk to me, I wish he hadn't.”
“He scared me Heg, he really scared me.”
“He grabbed me around my neck.”
Mapus pulled his collar away to show the mark that was left by his old friend. “. . . and he picked me up to his face Heg, right close, so close, and said . . . the universe was formed by conflict and in conflict it will end.”
“What did he mean Heg, what?”
Mapus began to sob and Hegwin’s words of comfort stuck in his throat as if his neck also, was held in danger. Hegwin rubbed his own neck as if to brush away an imaginary hand.
“When I saw Artagus Map, he never spoke, but his eyes. . . those ice blue eyes. It felt like he was lookin’ in my soul.” “ So much hate in those eyes.” “We need to tell the others Map, we need to tell them now.”
The door to the Fools Gold burst open, and a breathless young halfling stood in the opening, his face filled with fear but empty of any color. The little halfling began to speak.
“It was awful . . . bad . . . really bad.” All was quiet now. Everyone's eyes were on the one in the door.
“They found two Guards out by the wall, the wall in Misty. They were dead. Oh it was awful, just awful.”
The young Halfling with no strength dropped to his knees. “They were all shriveled up like, and partly burned . . . one part was here . . . one part was there.” He began to cry as he covered his face with his hands.
One who was sitting at the bar found a voice and whispered. “ What was it? Do they know?”
The young halfling looked up with tears streaming down his face. “Other Guards ran the attackers off. They say it was an Ogre and a Dark Elf.”
The twins looked at each other. Fear and sadness filled their hearts. “Map ... we have to go.”
“This can’t be happening, no ... I won't believe it .... I won't.”
Mapus rubbed his chest. “ My heart hurts Heg ... hurts bad.”
Hegwin held his twin by the arm. “ I know Map .... I know, mine too, but we have to go ... we have to go now.”
