Ch. 1: The Day Arrives
The comet was beautiful, moving at speeds close to just under hypersonic. However, for all the beauty, this comet had a deadly course set with a world teaming with life, and that is what he was doing there. A few thousand miles away standing in the void unprotected was a man of medium built, sandy colored hair, with a big belly. He looked like a round dough boy, only when you looked him in the eyes did you realize that those two pure black orbs held intelligence far beyond mere mortals could understand. With just a casual thought from this man the comets course changes. Not for a better place but for a different planet in a farther off galaxy. It would not reach its crash site for another 1,000 years. The comet would still kill millions of lives, his master had said that was the purpose of this comet, but he did not want billions dead. So once again, I had to do his house cleaning for this universe. Today, they said today he would get it. Today was almost over and nothing from the council yet. He was starting to wonder if they had forgotten about it like they were prone to do. Well maybe not prone to forgetfulness but more like taking there sweet time about it. Today was the day they were going to make him a Master.
Standing in space thinking about what was going to happen today a portal begins to open in front of Buzz. Walking out of it is his master. Bowing deeply Buzz greets his master and asks if everything is satisfactory. Smiling at Buzz, his master says all is well and that it is time, and gestures toward the portal. Stepping through a portal should be a wonder filled experience, but Buzz found that it was more of a let down then anything else. No extra sensations colored lights or sounds. Just a quick transition between one place and another. Not that he was complaining for traveling from one universe to another in a blink of an eye was awesome. That part never bored him.
Coming out of the portal Buzz realizes that they are at the center of the multiverse. A building so old that no one, not even the present council members knew who or what built this place. Buzz had it on good authority that some of these old geezers were will past there 10th billion in age. Older than dirt that is for sure. All agree that this building was the center of the first universe and something created it. Who it was has been a debate amongst the masters for eons. Even us apprentice’s get on the discussion once in awhile. The building was not much to look at really. More like a building out of a mind of a child if you look closely. It looked just like a house with a white picket fence around it. A huge tree with a tire swing in it and a sand box in one corner with toys. As far as I could tell, no one has ever played on any of it. We just move up to the door and enter. On the inside was a different matter. For size was relative. The interior was huge and resembled an old roman palace. I preferred the front my self but who can account for taste.
Walking next to my master we preceded up to the council chambers doors. Standing guard were two-second tier masters. In other words, they wore two universes. My master was a 3rd tier. We gave our names and were announced to the chamber. The packed room had masters and apprentices. I new I was staring because I head my friend Jacob tell me to close my mouth or flies would enter. Only once before had I seen this many in one place. It is uncommon for our kind to gather in such large groups. The multiverse is a constant Keepers business. If this many people were here. Then something was not being taken care of back home. I could only wonder at what was going on. It must be big and I know that my being ranked as master was not that big a deal to the council. So something else must be up. Tugging on my sleeve my master guides me up to the council’s table. Seated were five of the meanest men and women I have ever seen. They scared the business right out of me. Not because they were old and ugly. They were not they were gorgeous. It was just that these five members had the power of life or death over me and could use it in a whim if it suited their plans
