Which one?!

I've been playing World of Warcraft since Christmas and I loved the game and played it a ton... after going to the EQ2 site it got me hooked. I'd have to buy a new video card and all but I have enough. I want all your opinions on the highs and lows of EQ2. Also, if you've played WoW say some things about that game that EQ2 doesn't have and what WoW doesn't have.

May be a bit confusing =\

Thanks

RE: Which one?!

I've never played WoW, but I know a few people that do.

From what I understand, solo players have an easier time in WoW. If you can only play for 30 mins, or something like that, it's more ideal.

However, EQ2 can be solo'd, it just takes longer. I think EQ2 is graphically superior, and I feel that it's depth of content, and lore, and the over all imersiveness out-weighs WoW.

Technically speaking, EQ2 is more demanding on your PC, I think.

But, it's all really subjective.

Aye, I know, that wasn't very helpful was it?

RE: Which one?!

I haven't played either game, so I won't judge their gameplay quality.

As for graphics, technically EQ2 is better supporting more and newer DX features such as Bump Mappings, Pixel Shaders and god knows what more - I'm not that extensively familiar with exactly what features both do or do not support.
However, it is hard to make an objective comparison for the simple fact that both games also have very different graphical styles.
Due to this fact which game's graphics you like most is really made more a matter of personal taste rather than solid specifications.

RE: Which one?!

And oh, as for requirements; Both games should run fine with a CPU of 2,4Ghz or faster, 1Gig RAM - DDR2 preferably and a 128MB DX8 (DX9 preferably) video card.

RE: Which one?!

I have played both games for some time i will start with WoW, imo a game for kids (sry if it is an insult).
I say this because you can lvl any toon to 60 within a month, 10 to 15 days played time and there are alot of kids playig it, not all bad but most don't realy know how to play a MMORPG.
Crafting you can max out any tradeskill in a few hrs, i know cos i have done every tradeskill, mind you there are rares patterns and factons you have to work on after your 300skill.
The game is set up to be for 2 types of play solo/raid seems most everyone solo's there toon to 60 and then tries to remember how to play in a raid (besides the well guilded).
Over all looks...lil cartoony imo.
After you lvl a toon to 60 on either side doing it again seems to be a big bore cos of the lack of quests aka same ole same ole.
WoW has been out for about the same time as EQ2 and has yet to release an expantion .
Sever issuse are very anoying and getting the 300 in que does not help when your tring to log in.
The classes are ok but don't seem to give you the same desire to try them all.
One thing i didn't like about the game is that they realy didn't change the skins of the enemy mobs for the players, for instance if your a orc and you find a trader camp of orc's looks like you fighting your mirror.

Now for EQ2

well at first this game sucked imo lol but after the revamp many things have been changed some good some seems to make the game to easy and as all eq1 players know EQ has never made things easy it's a good way to keep the good players playing
Lvling a toon takes more time and has the feeling of acomplishment to each lvl
Tradeskills are set up as a lvl based not skill lvl and is more indepth then i have seen in any game (but june 14/06 sony is nerfing the tradeskills to make it easyer) witch will still be fun to play your trades just hate when times are simple
The game is set up for solo/group/raid very well NOW at first it was based grp/raid
in WoW the grping play experiance sucked imo EQ2 most everyone knows how to play there toon and how to grp... unlike WoW where pick-up grps scare the poop out of you.
Overall looks and sound of the game is worth playing just for that.but is quit the usage on your PC's vid card and cpu

EQ has had the best sound ambuance(SP??) from eq1 and didn't loose out in EQ2 (WoW you end up turning sound off and listening to mp3's)
Eq2 has had 3 expantions and 3 addons since release but even if you don't buy them the world is still larger them WoW .
Classes well more to choose from and they all look like fun and you want to lvl 90% of them hehe
Now to get to some things in EQ2 that WoW does not have
-Guild lvling system wich gives you some cool benifits
-Status to your toon and your guild if your in a guild
-quests, there are more than dubble.and the quests in EQ2 i lvl faster than i can do them witch leaves the feeling of new quests to do when i lvl a new class (get to do the ones i didn't get to)
-mentoring if your 40 and your bud is 10 you can grp together and still make exp you will get capped at the same lvl as your bud and exp with him/her
-houseing and guild houseing
-shared banking system with all your toons on the same sever

so IMO WoW is fun for 6 months at that time you have beat the game killed Oxy sucked the life out of you repeating MC/BWL and shock your head at the pathetic pvp system
IMO EQ2 has more to discover MUCH more content and doesn't hurt so much to repeat :)

my opinion only so take it easy on the flamming

RE: Which one?!

I haven't played either game. And I doubt I ever will. But I just had to chirp in here.

First of all because brodar made a post. That doesn't happen too often. But they are alwys worth the read. Great seeing you here, Bro!

Second. I would like to point out there are more options besides WOW and EQ2. There are some very cool MMORPGs in the pipeline. The games I am looking the most forward to are Vanguard, Spellborn and Hero's Journey. I have no idea how I will juggle all three games and a life together. Fortunately I still have a few months to figure that out. But definately have a look.

But in the meantime, play EQ2! It is a really beautiful game from what I have seen of it. And definately worth anybody's time.

I normally wander around on all the GameAmp forums. And when I saw your name I had to reply. Good to see you are still visiting us, and that you are having fun in Norrath. I am still doing my thing in COH and COV, so I might see you on the rogue islands later.

RE: Which one?!

I agree with Phedre_D...

Many impressive games on the Horizon, not to undercut EQ by any means or WoW for that matter. EQII is very pleasing to the eye as well as game content. It's challenging and will easily suck you into the storyline, like a good Fantasy Novel.

I guess the game depends on the gamer. If you can afford to do so, just pay for the game and try it out, no matter what it is.

WARNING: If ya jump into EQII....it may own your soul :)

Fill free to check out the Gameamp links, several great games out there and some "ground breaking" ones coming.

Nothing like giving you more choices to ponder over :)

RE: Which one?!

hehe it prolly will own your soul i still get the pull to play clasic EQ and it seems i do login to it for a month every year to relive that game and i still enjoy it,imo if sony would take EQclasic and give it a new engine and keep game content alone it would be back up in the top 3.
EQ2 is still fun i have taken a break this month and opened CoH/V, plan to play EQ2 again soon just waiting to see when spellborn is going to start open beta / full realease before i comit to a month of play with anyone

RE: Which one?!

Ok I have not been on GameAmp quite a week now but I have to say quality posts and replies like this really make me miss the days of running my bbs and having great conversations with some superbly bright folks. Well I will curb my frothing enthusiasm for a bit to comment with regard to the original question.
I have been playing EQ2 since April 1st, 2005 and have can honestly say my appreciation and enjoyment for the game continues to bloom. The game is well balanced for Group, Solo, or Raid oriented styles, looks fantastic, and has a fantastic community so I hope I am still playing for a very long time. I played WOW for about a month and while I think it is a very solid game and can see where it would have mass appeal to new players to the MMORPG genre for me it was doomed by the player base and community orientation towards the auction house more than the adventure. Also the less robust character options and server issues at the time assured me that it would be a short trip to Azeroth.
Well there is my 2 cents worth. :)
A few other temptations of note. I really wanted the game Horizons to make it but it never did. That game offered some great options to build structures and guild cohesiveness. Also it is worth mentioning if you like PVP and grand scale you might want to check out Shadowbane which is at this time FREE! Vanguard is a game that holds a tremendous amount of promise and is of the most interest to my guildmates but the new EQ2 expansion raises the guild level max from 50 to 60 which means the Heritage Quest grind wheel shall have bones a new to powder.

RE: Which one?!

Yep lots of folks love COV/H and I remember when it came out it claimed lots of Shadowbane players. SOE really does probably own me. I think the Station Access plan where you play one flat fee to play all the game offerings and get the adventure packs and extra character slots was just brilliant and it has assured that just about everyone in my guild will likely at least buy a copy of Vanguard. As for this site being slow I hope I can contribute to changing that some by posting the address around all the boards I troll and by rating folks so they earn some credibility and perhaps feel self motivated to participate more. Incrimental rewards are the key to building real addiction. :P
Ok I have also add that in addition to liking the setup here at GameAmp I really have enjoyed the folks I have interfaced with in this section of service. :)

RE: Which one?!

We had this discussion over at the Vanguard forum, whether we should go for the station account or just get a Vanguard subscription alone. I was quickly to jump and say I would not get the station account. But maybe I should reconsider. If it doesn't cost me that much extra to play EQ and EQ2, why not.

My original thought was that I would never have time to play anything but Vanguard. And EQ has become the game of die-hard fans. Not very interesting for new players. And I sort of had pushed EQ2 in that same corner.

So is it worth going station, or should I just stick with Vanguard alone?

RE: Which one?!

Well the thing about stating access is that my recollection is that it is only like $4 or $5 more per month and you get access to both EverQuest games, Star Wars Galaxies, Planetside, and for EQ2 players you get 4 more character slots and the adventure packs for free after 2 months in the subscription so it is very hard to pass this one up. I think you may even have access to the Comic Generator and some other mini game type content. I remember thinking to myself that I would probably never find the time to play the other games but who knows it is nice to know I can just load StarWars Galaxies and jump right in when the fancy strikes me and boy when I found out Vanguard's monthly fee would be included with Station Access needless to I was thrilled.

Your right about EQ classic i think most of it is that people expect great grafix these days and when you try EQ classic many say oh my god these grafix suck , well they should they are on a engine that is about 8 years old , but if you can get past the visual aspect they game lore and content surpasses many games out there ...for myself i love the fear of death EQ classic still offers , you do everything and more in your power not to die because the penalty is so harsh...games these days, noone cares if they die or even use death as a form of travel, witch imo takes the rpg out of the game and puts the feeling of console in your hands
well now that i find my self way off topic yes i do think the station pass is worth it hehe

RE: Which one?!

Yep two fold in that people always complained about the Shadowbane graphics but the game was awesome and I think respect for the design is what will keep EQ 1 going for a lot longer. Heck I even hope to find time to play an old dialup bbs game called operation overkill is it is available over telnet now. That game had ansi only graphics (16 color simple) or you could upgrade and run a special terminal program bringing it to a luscious 64 colors. Thanks for the reply and great to see some company here. Now speaking of EQ2 back to playing, we just snuck in a 15 min. offline break but time to return.
